“He Laughed While She Replaced Me”
I’ve been dating Matt for almost two years. Long enough to know his favorite takeout order, how he hates mushrooms, and that his mom… well, she’s *intense*.
From the beginning, she acted like I was a threat. She’d say things like,
**“Hope I don’t lose my son to some girl,”**
and
**“No one will ever know him like I do.”**
At first, I brushed it off as weird overprotectiveness. But it never stopped.
Then came Matt’s birthday.
I was so excited. I’d planned everything — wore a new dress, wrapped his gift with way too much ribbon, and even baked cookies to surprise him later. We went out to dinner with his family, and I was ready to just enjoy the evening.
That is… until we got there.
His mom had already saved the seat next to him. Okay, whatever. I took the other side.

But just before we ordered, she stood up, smoothed her skirt like she was about to give a performance, turned to me and said sweetly,
**“Scooch, sweetie.”**
I blinked. “Sorry?”
**“Scooch down,”** she said louder, already putting her handbag on my chair. **“Let’s see how you handle a little separation.”**
And then… *everyone laughed.*
**INCLUDING Matt.**
I felt my heart drop. She slid in between us like she belonged there — grabbing his hand, leaning her head on his shoulder, whispering jokes like they were on a first date. She even fed him a bite of her appetizer. *Fed him.* I’m not even joking.
I just sat there, stunned.
It wasn’t funny. It wasn’t cute. It was humiliating.
So I stood up.
At first no one noticed — until I grabbed my purse and calmly said,
**“Matt, I hope you and your *real* date enjoy the rest of your night.”**

Then I walked out.
He didn’t follow me.
The next morning he texted:
**“You really embarrassed my mom. You should apologize.”**
That was the final straw.
I replied:
**“You can stay with the woman who wants to date you. I’ll find someone whose mom doesn’t see me as competition.”**
Blocked. Deleted. Done.
I deserve a partner who defends me — not one who laughs while I’m being humiliated.
Happy birthday, Matt. Hope you and Mommy enjoyed dessert.
